Blueberry Deploys VoIP Phone SystemVoIP stands for ‘Voice over Internet Protocol’; instead of sending phone conversation data down a normal BT or ISDN line, phone data is transmitted as internet traffic down a standard broadband internet connection.VOIP is also sometimes a byword for poor call quality due to excessive time-lag between the speaker and listener. To solve this problem, Blueberry deployed a Cisco network, with QoS (‘Quality of Service’) at all stages to prioritise VoIP data over other internet traffic and ensure phone conversations remain uninterrupted. All testing and implementation was undertaken by members of Blueberry’s staff that are skilled in network design, hardware and system administration. Blueberry has also developed a PC companion program to the VoIP system, which integrates Asterisk with Outlook to allow dialling, caller display and call logging. Initially intended for internal use, Blueberry hopes to commercialise this technology soon. Martin Green said: “Asterisk has strong benefits in terms of integration with other company systems – for example, CRM – making it extremely easy to extract phone records and load these into central databases.” Blueberry is happy to discuss the potential of this technology with customers and resellers.
